It was the day before Christmas, chaos through the house, the kids were screaming, not the mouse! The Community Cafe opened it’s doors to some special guests, providing an open space for the children to burn off their excited energy and a sanctuary for mam and dad to get a brew, while everyone waited patiently for the big arrival… IT’S SANTA!

For the second year running, YMCA Community Cafe in Cockfield held their Story with Santa event on Christmas Eve. They were joined by families from the surrounding area, ready to listen to Santa’s Christmas tales, and he even got the crowd singing at one point. Not everyone was in perfect tune or time but you couldn’t help but smile listening to it all. The children received their personalised gifts and couldn’t wait to unwrap them!

The event was supported by North Star Housing, it helped bring the community together and enjoy the smiles on the children’s faces on a magical night. It can be a stressful time for families and the Community Cafe is a safe space where people can come at any time of year to get advice, guidance, help and support.

Christmas is no different, the Community Cafe hosts this to provide that little sanctuary for all, at as low a cost as possible. Those who purchased a hot meat sandwich, hot drinks or anything from the cafe during Story with Santa, contributed towards the resources that make events like this possible. The volunteers who wrapped the gifts, the staff who ensured the space was cleared and decorated festively… all for the benefit of the local community.

The Story with Santa provides an affordable opportunity for families to see Santa, it gives the community a chance to come together on Christmas Eve and a rest for the parents who have very excited children in the house. It is all worth it for the smile on the children’s faces through the duration of the event.
