List of Volunteering Opportunities

We are always looking for new volunteers. These opportunities are available with YMCA Teesdale:-


Community cafés.

We have 2 coffee shops. One at the Cockfiled Community Centre in Lipscomb Hall and another based in the Randolph Centre in Evenwood.

As with many coffee shops they can become very busy at times. Each cafe has there own opening times and days. These can be found looking on the separate pages by the clicking on the names above.

  • Interacting with members of the public.
  • Taking orders.
  • Preparing food.
  • Baking.
  • Taking payments.
  • Cleaning.
  • Supporting community members using the facilities available to them

As a Trustee of a Charity – and also in the case of Teesdale YMCA as a Member of the Board of a Company Limited by Guarantee – you would be jointly responsible with other trustees for:

  • Ensuring that the Charity is governed properly and according to The Charity Commission and Companies House requirements.
  • Enabling the organisation to shape a strategy to deliver its aims and objectives.
  • Ensuring that all statutory, legal and financial obligations are met.
  • Being the employer of paid staff.
  • Working to positively promote and support Teesdale YMCA’s values and profile.
  • The skills/experience you might have could include; Relevant professional skills and employment experience:
    (e.g. financial, administrative, educational, youth work, social work, business, legal, media)
  • Community involvement in Teesdale.
  • A passion for enabling young people and others to be safe and to develop their potential.
  • You would need to be able to understand how to be a team player at a senior level, have the ability to sift, consider and process complex information, be able to articulately explain your thoughts, respect confidentiality and be able to contribute to informed decision-making.

Youth Work.


Supporting youth workers in engaging with young people who attend YMCA Teesdale.

You would help with a range of activities and programs:

  • Work in partnership with professionals from other organisations that support young people such as social care, health, police, schools, youth offending teams and local authorities.
  • Help plan programmes on topics such as health, fitness, smoking cessation, drug and alcohol awareness, relationships and bullying.
  • Provide social, emotional and behavioural support, or just be a friendly face.
  • Youth work volunteers require safeguarding training and a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

YMCA Teesdale Retail Shop (Barnard Castle)

We have a number of volunteer opportunities at our YMCA shop.

  • Sorting and preparing clothes or furniture for sale.
  • Back office duties – steaming, pricing and sorting stock.
  • Using the till.
  • Arranging collections of donated items.
  • Selling goods: clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac, furniture and DVDs.
  • Interacting with members of the public.
  • Representing YMCA on the high street.
  • Our shop sells a range of items with second-hand retro goods, high street and designer clothing, accessories, books, CDs, DVDs, records, bric-a-brac and more.
